Hi! My name is Jon Burns. I’m 40 years old and live in Kemah, TX. Right next to Galveston Bay.
I moved to Texas (from Arkansas) in the spring of 2009 and since then I’ve been very interested in live music. Not just in the sense that I like to go out and enjoy live music. I’ve definitely done that. Specifically I’ve been very interested in the skills needed to actually make a show happen.
Over the past few years I’ve done pretty much everything short of getting onstage and performing. I’ve run sound, booked shows, and done the PR and marketing to promote shows. I’ve worked with sponsors and venues. I’ve sold tickets and created websites. I even built my own business, called Pirates & Poets, that is dedicated to promoting songwriter shows.
Over the last few years my focus has narrowed. I’m not as interested in single shows as I used to be. Instead I’ve taken a deep dive into the world of event and festival production.
Not huge mega festivals with corporate sponsors and 50,000 people attending. Boutique festivals. Small events where the artists and fans can have true interaction.
I’m currently involved with the production of 6 multi day events. I’m the outright owner of one of those events, a partner in 3 more, and a hired gun for the final 2. They are all listed over on the right side of this blog.
I’ll spend the next few days talking about each of those events. After that I plan on using this blog to catalog my adventures in live music while also offering my thoughts on the music industry. I’ll probably sprinkle a few interviews in as well.
Thanks for checking out my blog. Don’t forget to look me up next time you’re on twitter. I’m @jonboy820
